Many people wish that they could go back to their childhood years sometimes. During those days, things were much simpler, such as work, relationships and overall we think as adults. This fact may be true on one level, but on another, most people didn’t know that kids have lots of stress too. Even if you were one of those kids who could not wait to be a grown-up, today's children are getting a bigger taste of adulthood than ever before.

As a single parent households continue to grow, the daily tasks and routine that children take on tend to be different than a couple of decades ago when two-parent households were more common. While one parent punched a clock, the other parent tended to matters of home and family. The latter would normally do the grocery shopping, household chores, budgeting for the family and handle issues affecting the kids such as school and their extracurricular activities.

In today's single parent household, most of the time, the child may be responsible for household matters while the adult works. In a sense, the school-age child is taking on a second job with daily chores such as cooking, cleaning and other chores or looking after younger siblings on top of any homework assignments they may have from school. While some may see this as teaching a child responsibility as early as possible, others say that even adults can't balance many tasks without feeling overwhelmed. As the children's minds are still developing, these responsibilities assigned to them can create stress over time which may result in rebellious behavior or psychological disorders of the child. Try to see if your child may be dealing with too much. This doesn't mean that it's a good idea to just watch TV, play video games and be outside on the skateboard.


Other areas of stress for kids include competition for popularity especially in school or even at home against other siblings, sports anxiety and issues around school performance. Kids may also get self-conscious about the types of clothing they wear, if they performed poorly at a soccer practice and why friends are invited to a party when they were excluded. Be sensitive enough to your kids stress and help them by talking things out. Make time for them to talk about their day and their activities, their success and their worries. Try to do one fun activity each night even if it is just for only fifteen minutes to help them feel that they are special.
