There are many different scholarship scams that students will have to look out for when seeking financial assistance for a graduate or undergraduate program studies. There are thousands of people each year who fall victim to these scams, and the best thing you can do for yourself is to learn as much about them as possible. You'll want to start by looking at a few of the most basic scams, including scholarships which require an application fee. These are just ads designed to get your money and offer you nothing in return, so it is best to avoid these.

Any scholarship program which requires that you send any amount of money to them is probably illegitimate and you should steer clear. Another type of scholarship scam is one that tells you that you have already won thousands of dollars in scholarship money, but before you can claim it, you have to pay certain redemption fees.

You should also be suspicious if you get an offer for a scholarship which requires you to pay for more information about it or even to receive the reward money itself. Any scholarship that says everyone is eligible would be quite odd. The nature of scholarships is that they aren't awarded to every applicant. Each college funding award has its own specific criteria for awarding money. This may be based on one's grade point average, special interest group or a different criteria. Never trust a source that claims everyone wins.

If you receive a brochure or see an advertisement somewhere for a grant money and it seems like there is a little bit too much "hype" behind it, then the best thing to do would be to continue your research. You don't want to waste your time applying for a scholarship that tries to deceive students using phrases like free money" because it's probably questionable. There are certain websites that analyze companies and this can be a good way to exercise caution if you have doubt on a company's claims.

Every grant or scholarship comes with its own set of requirements you must meet. Study this before applying to see if you are a candidate. If the offer you are considering does not have a telephone number or any contact information, then this can also raise a red flag. These scholarship scams have gotten more prevalent over the years due to so many older students going back to school. There is plenty of free information on the internet available that discusses legitimate sources for college money.
